Story

It is linked to the mines near Daiquirí beach in Cuba around 1900 and to American engineer Jennings Cox. Rum, lime and sugar were combined in the Caribbean long before, so the 'invention' is really a naming.

Technical notes

Shake hard for a light, frothy texture; double-straining removes ice shards that would keep diluting it in the glass. Adjust the syrup to your limes' acidity.

Serving

Very cold, in a small glass.

Origin

Disputed origin · c. 1900 · Daiquirí, Cuba

The Jennings Cox attribution is popular but debated; the combination is far older than the name.

Variations

  • Hemingway Daiquiri

With grapefruit and maraschino, less sugar.

  • Daiquiri de charanda

Swap the rum for Michoacán charanda.

Substitutions

  • Piloncillo syrup for a more caramel profile.

Pairings

  • Fish tostadas
  • Fried plantain
