Guest Hospitality
Practical guideBeginner4 min readEditorial draft
Service is what you do; hospitality is how it makes the guest feel. Practical ideas to make people want to come back.
Service vs. hospitality
A correct drink, served quickly and well, is good service. Remembering a guest's name, noticing they're cold or celebrating something, is hospitality. Great bars do both.
Read the person
Not everyone wants to chat. Some come to read, some are on a date, some want to know the bartender. Observe before you talk and match their energy.
- Greet within the first few seconds.
- Water without being asked.
- Ask what they like before recommending.
When something goes wrong
If a guest doesn't like a drink, don't argue: offer to swap it. Listen, apologize without excuses and fix it. Often the most loyal guest is one whose problem was handled well.
